It appears that we like to put up walls just as quickly after taking them down.
Nick Miller’s report in the Sydney Morning Herald documented Europe’s rise in borders and fences since the fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago. Our desire to protect ourselves from threat – perceived or otherwise – seems to justify an ‘us and them’ mentality.
What does this mean for leadership?
The Squadify dataset tells us that people are ambivalent about putting team interests above those of the individual (16th out 37 conditions). Teams appear unified but in reality often act as individuals, with sophisticated behavioural ‘fences’ to protect themselves.
Starting with the bigger tribe – the organisation, team or humanity itself – and then aligning individual action to best serve it could be the answer to more than just our business challenges.
