A recent article in Psychology Today shared research by neuroscientist Matt Lieberman that shows that there are two parts of the prefrontal cortex used for processing information about identity: the medial prefrontal cortex (active during our default mode or when we are not focused on the external environment) and the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (active when processing information about our position in groups as well as the perspective of others).

The tricky part is that when the medial prefrontal cortex is active, it biases us to become egocentric. And that is our ‘default mode’? Yikes.

What does this mean for leadership?

How do we stay out of the egocentric mode of our default settings?

Simple: stay connected. And as leaders, we need to build teams of deeply connected people, not just groups of individuals.
